Learning unit contents
The following concepts will be studied during this course:
1. The evolution of medical representations throughout history
2. The epidemiological transition of health and social inequalities
3. Social and psychological determinants of health
4. The humanist dimension in health relation:
- ethics
- patient education
- empathy and medical communication
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
General objectives:
The course aims to work on how the caregiver's role is represented in the context of their relationship with the patient, whether in the context of acute or chronic illness (with a view to understanding the point of an educational attitude).
Specific objectives:
- Examine the evolution of the physician's role throughout history and of medical practices from the classical antiquity to the 21st century
- Study representations of health, illness, and quality of life, as well as of their evolutions, from both the caregiver's and the patient's perspective.
- Understand health problems as a part of a cause-effect network, looking beyond the linear "one cause = one illness" relationship
- Know the impact of social inequalities and health determiners on patient care
- Learn to approach patients like a specific type of learner interacting in a particular environment
- Define elements that characterise a quality therapeutic relationship
- Know and understand the concepts involved in the patient's grieving process
- Know and understand models of health beliefs

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classes will include theoretical presentations, practice sessions, and exam question simulations.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Theoretical lectures consist of remote classes.
Folders constituted of powerpoints, notes, articles are distributed to the students for every chapter. Each chapter is accompanied by a quiz showcasing several questions to help the student grasp the chapter's content and prepare its evaluation.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:
The evaluation consists in a written multiple-choice exam. It will be organized on site if the sanitary situation permits it.
