Learning unit contents

Pharmacognosy (partim 1) is mainly focused on phytochemistry: presntation of various kinds of primary (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins ) and mainly secondary metabolites (phenylpropanoids: lignans, flavonoids, coumarins.., terpenoids and steroids, alkaloids...)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practicals and seminars:
Extraction , identification and assay of active principles from medicinal plants (monographs of European Pharmacopoeia).
Attendance during practical work is mandatory. 
LOCATION: Practicals: Laboratory of chemistry ( 4th floor) of the Pharmaceutical Institute (B36).

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

Additional information:

Written examination about definite matter. Practicals: 10% of total  in the exception of an important deficiency (< 8.0) in the theoric final exam.

Work placement(s)

Possibility of internship. Student instructor: possibilities are offered for students interested in teaching pharmacognosy. The tasks consist of supervising practical work. Research: outside of class and examination periods (from the end of block 2 of the Bachelor in Pharmaceutical Sciences), motivated students can do an internship in the laboratory (student-researchers). At the end of the course, a doctorate is possible in the service.
