Learning unit contents

Development of questions, scales and items measuring sociodemographics, socio-affective constructs and contextual variables in contextual questionnaires in education. In addition, an introduction to the development of cognitive tests will be provided.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The learning outcomes of this seminar are the following ones :






  • explore different frameworks for background questionnaires, non cognitive variables and cognitive domains
  • reflect about an assessment framework; select skills, processes, contents and aspects to assess, develop questions and items in order to measure adequately constructs and domains;
  • know and apply the technical guidelines in order to build items and questionnaires;
  • collect accurately data and code the data in an appropriate way;
  • perform the appropriate analyses in order to check for the psychometric properties of the items and scales: alpha of Cronbach alpha, factorial analysis...;
  • interpret the analyses and draw the conclusions for reviewing the instruments;
  • write a report presenting the results of the tests and questionnaires.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Having succeeded the course Notions de statistiques de base (C. Monseur, bloc 0).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory and practical classes are closely linked. The approach is problem-based learning. After a distance learning session, students have to build, analyse, revise items and questions for background questionnaires.

Combination of presential sessions and at distance sessions.

Extracts from textbooks in English and a synthesis in French will be available.
