Learning unit contents

This class includes three parts:

  • fossil animals
  • fossil plants
  • micropaleontology

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Fossil animals  Knowing the nature and biases of the Metazoan fossil record, the evolutionary history of the main animal lineages and their links with global changes.
Fossil plants Knowing and understand the evolution of the different lineages of embryophytes (land plants). 
Micropaleontology at the end of the class, the student will be able to describe the major steps of evolution of the three domains of life and their microscopic fossil record, as well as the challenges in evidencing the first traces of life.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of the morphology, physiology, systematics, ecology and biology of microorganisms, plants and animals
Moreover, a basic knowledge in geology is also requested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Face-to-face lectures ilustrated with fossil examinations.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Written or oral exam. Partial examption is not possible.
