Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Nervous system - Shared concepts
Anatomy - 6 courses: introduction to the anatomy of the nervous system (4 courses, with the exception of the peripheral nervous system, see locomotor module), vegetative nervous system (1 course) and cranial nerves (1 course).
Physiology - 4 courses and 4 chapters: sensory systems, motor systems, cognition and state systems
Implementation - 3 courses: vegetative and somatic sensorimotor systems, pain, emotions, and cranial sensorimotor systems
The objective of this first part of the neuroscientific module is to introduce medical and dentistry students to the fundamentals of morphology (and key embryological concepts) and physiology/biochemistry of the nervous system and special sense organs. This is a prerequisite to the upcoming courses more oriented to the specifics of MED and DENT sections.
Nervous system - Specific concepts
- Applied neuroanatomy and -physiology
- Histology
- Semiology
- Neuropharmacology
- Clinical perspectives (integrative questions,...)
- Clinical case/problem-based learning
At the end of this course, the student will be able to identify the general symptoms and the signs of neurological disease on the basis of their morphological and functional origin, as well as general principles of treatment. He will thus be equipped for the following program on the pathology of the nervous system and sense organs, including psychiatry.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Nervous system - Shared concepts
More particularly for the neuroanatomical objectives and the strategy to reach them, please refer to the initial explanatory part of the course book ("syllabus").
This learning unit, common to medical and dentistery students, provides the necessary neuroanatomical and neurophysiological basis for the immediately following courses NERF0130-B-a et NERF0130-C-a, as well as the rest of the curriculum.
Nervous system - Specific concepts
Not exhaustive:
- To know the principles of the development, the microscopic morphology (histology) and macroscopic (embryology, anatomy) organs of the senses and the nervous system, including the brains and their vascularization.
- To know the various levels of morphological and functional organization of the driving system, the sensory systems, the awakening and the sleep, the cognitive functions and the feelings.
- To know the principles of the neurological foundation course and the organs of the senses and identify the big neurological syndromes.
- To know the main pharmacological targets of CNS drugs, the principles of the underlying mechanisms, including for delayed therapeutic responses
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Nervous system - Shared concepts
Introduction to neurophysiology - NEUR0431-1
Co and pre-requisites are detailed in the general Baccalaureate Medical formation (global course program).
Nervous system - Specific concepts
Introduction to neurophysiology - NEUR0431-1
NERF0130-A-e Approche multidisciplinaire du système nerveux, Système nerveux - Notions communes aux sciences médicales et dentaires

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Nervous system - Shared concepts
Traditional lectures in the auditorium.
Nervous system - Specific concepts
Teaching is multidisciplinary and includes:
- classic lectures and more interactive sessions in the auditorium based on the provided learning objectives
- practice sessions including intiation to clinical reasoning and labs
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Nervous system - Shared concepts
Face-to-face, auditorium.
Nervous system - Specific concepts
Hybrid course (theoretical aspects in classical classrooms ; some practical aspects are developped within e-learning and small groups sessions: MEDE0002 et MEDE003, -004 (TP)).
These teaching conditions will be adapted according to the requirements of the sanitary situation (COVID-19) and partially or completely moved online into virtual classrooms.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Nervous system - Shared concepts
for the written exam
- hybrid session: in person, multiple choice questions and/or open questions
- on-line exam: eCampus, multiple choice questions and/or open questions
Any student who is unable to sit the exam in person, due to quarantine duly attested by a certificate, must represent the exam in oral or written form. This exam will be rescheduled as soon as possible during the session depending on the availability of the teacher (s)
