Learning unit contents

This year, the seminar will offer a critical reflection on the construction of musical theory and its main elements, in the West from Antiquity to the Renaissance.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The place of music theory in the construction of knowledge. The main figures of theoreticicians and their respective contributions.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Foundations of the current theory of music. Ability to "read" music. Knowledge of the main lines of the history of human thought.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Interactive seminar. Each course includes a lecture and tutorials, case studies on historical documents. At each session, the students receive a small research which they must present the result during the following course.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Due to the health situation, most of the teaching will exceptionally be given at a distance.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Written exam: homework assignment. The subject will be given at the beginning of the courses. + Personal research notes from each session.
