Learning unit contents
Description and use of different types of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and biological materials. Origin and optimisation of mechanical and physical properties of materials. Selection of the optimal material in function of the required mechanical and/or physical properties. Concept of selection of materials for a typical application (high temperature, optical property,..). Practical cases of materials selection.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledge in Materials Sciences, including the different types of materials (Ceramics, metals, polymers....) and the relationships between their processing (synthesis, forming, thermal treatment...), structures (crystallinity, phases in presence...) and usage properties, such as described e.g. in the course "PHYS0904 : Physique des Matériaux" or other equivalent courses
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Exercises (remote) : Use of the CES software (Ashby method) to select a material ; personal work on the design of a part (selection and optimisation of the required material), in english.
Learning by project. Group project. Development of personal skills on writing of scientific reports, case studies, oral presentation, English bibliography research.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Lectures in English. Theoretical lectures; bibliographical research; free work on computer (CES).
Due to the covid-19 pandemic, students will be splitted in two groups, one group will attend the lecture face-to-face, podcast will be made available for the other group - groups will alternate every other week.
The first lecture takes place in week 1, on Tuesday September 15th at 9:00 a.m.
Groups for the exercises and projects are organised remotely (on eCampus).

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Exam will be a written exam (with mixed open and multiple choice questions) either in class, if the health context allows it or, if not, in remote mode

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Project: one evaluated report and one oral presentation by group of 2-4 students.
Written examination on the basis of readings and lecture slides: Explanation of the theory taught during the lectures.
A mark weighting system is used. The theoretical exam counts for 75% of the total evaluation, the project counts for 25%.
It is mandatory to take the test on basis knowledge, to participate to the exercises, to write the report and to present the work report to have access to the final exam.
The note for the practical sessions (report and presentation) is transfered from 1° to 2d session.
