Learning unit contents

This course is devoted to a critical examination of school grammar and more particulary of the way it deals with the structure of the sentence, its components and the use and variation of the words. Those concepts and theories will systematically be examined in the light of the practical reality of language use.
In the second part of the course, we will discuss the principles of grammar, more particulary the nature -vs-function principle that underlies it and we will see its functioning can be figured out and analyzed.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Course objectives:
To enable students to
a) improve their mastery of the French language (linguistic knowledge)
b) better understand the functioning of the French language (metalinguistic knowledge)
c) improve their ability to grasp, use and evaluate different descriptions and explanations which grammars give concerning the French language (scientific and critical know-how)
d) become more aware of the functioning of the language, and make better use of procedures for discovering the language's rules, and explaining certain difficulties attached to it (pedagogical know-how).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of the French language (B2, preferably C1) and its basic grammar are necessary. A formative test wil be organized in the begining of the course.

Lecture during which the students are systematically invited to participate actively in debates.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

First Semester, Tuesdays, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Bât. A2, Salle Kurth.

Assessment methods and criteria
