Learning unit contents
Textual semiotics provides a method to analyse texts, literary or not, based upon linguistic premises.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
1. Initiation to methods and practices of internal analysis, particularly of literary texts.
2. Inititation to theoretical problems about linguistic textual analysis.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Competence in French language is essential for an appreciation of the complexities of French texts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Phase 1. Readings (at home) of semiotic interpretations. Discussion (in class) on these readings.
Phase 2. Semiotic analysis of texts : exercises (home). Questions and answers (in class) about these exercises.
Phase 3. Preparatory work for the examination.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Active face-to-face seminar. Classe attendance is mandatory. Autumn term. Every Friday, 14:00-16:00, local A2/5/16. First class : September 25, 2019.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
The second phase of the course will be organised in three sessions by distance learning, on Fridays 6/11, 20/11 and 4/12 from 14:00 to 16:00 (connection modalities will be specified by e-mail).
In preparation for each of these three sessions, a written analysis exercise will be given to the teacher, at his e-mail address (semir.badir@uliege.be), no later than the Wednesday preceding the session. The submission of this exercise is mandatory. Details of each exercise will be given by e-mail.
The conditions for the paper work to be considered as an examination remain unchanged.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
A paper work (10/15 pp.) in lieu of examination must be submitted by the student, both in pdf format to the email address of the teacher and hard-copy in his mailbox, at the latest the first day of the session.
This paper will present an argumented interpretation of a French literary text based upon a semiotic analysis.
