Learning unit contents

Summary ear anatomy, deafness type, hearing assessment and hearing aids.
Education of the deaf : history.
Approach to the sign language phonology, morphology and syntax.
Approach to lip-reading methods.
Initiation to figerspelling, Signed French, Cued Speech.
Audiophonology therapy and prelingual deafness: outcomes on child development.
Reading & writing and school path in Belgium.
Parental speech therapy guidance.
Psychology and deafness.
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To be up to date on teaching and rehabilitation of deaf child at the present time.
To be sensitive to sceening and early diagnosis of hearing loss.
Audiophonology methods for the deaf child.
Practical initiation: Signed French, Cued Speech.
To allude to French speaking Belgian Sign Language and fingerspelling.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

bachelor's 3rd year psychological and educational sciences.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Illustration of rehabilitation speech therapy sessions for impraired children.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Course during 3 hours per day in the first semester,

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

If sanitary conditions requie it, live lessons with a platform as Zoom or use of Unicast live (no recording of clinical videos possible for ethical reasons). 

Recommended or required readings

Course-notes (250 pages) + annexed articles; references bibliographic, vidéos.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
