Learning unit contents

This course is intended for first-year law students 
This course wil essentially be geared towards verbal interaction and the reinforcement of oral language skills. It will tackle various language functions such as giving a structured presentation, expressing an opinion and arguing a point.
It will cover law-related topics and vocabulary, without focusing on one specific branch nor on highly technical terminology.
This module will also promote the students' practice of basic grammar structures, in order to improve oral fluency.


 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this module the students will have

  • improved their oral fluency through a series of exercises and activities related to law designed to elicit conversations and discussions;
  • improved their oral skills in different fields of law.
Students must take an active participation during class (ongoing evaluation) and will learn, in addition to everyday Dutch, specific legal vocabulary.



 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

This course builds upon 1st year course: "Néerlandais usuel et juridique"

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • Oral activities such as discussions, role playing, presentations, debates on legal topics presented through short videos.
  • Practical exercises to reactivate, assimilate and use legal vocabulary.
  • Drill exercises in order to put basic grammar structures into practice and improve oral fluency.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

This module is offered during one term, with ten weekly 90-minute classes.
Attendance is compulsary. Students will prepare the activities and exercises planned for each class. Classes are interactive and regular attendance and active participation are essential.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Dependent on the sanitary context, face-to-face classes might not remain possible.  In that case, the course will take place live on ZOOM or Collaborate according to the normal schedule.
An on-site oral examination in January will remain the preferred option. If that is impossible, the oral examination will be organized via ZOOM or Collaborate .

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

I. Oral examination: 14/20
    a) presentation of a legal topic based on one or several texts chosen by the student. 
    b) discussion on legal issues studied in class. 
 II.  Continued assessment: 6/20
      a) oral presentation on a legal topic: 4/6
      b) test (vocabulary and grammar) during the 5th class: 2/6
The result of the continued assessment will be maintained and included in the global result of the 2nd session. 
If covid regulations do not allow in-person assessments, the examination will consist of an oral examination organized by videoconference
