Learning unit contents

This course is intended for 2nd year law students. The course will mainly focus on the reading comprehension of simple law-related texts. It will centered on:

  • the acquisition of basic general and legal vocabulary
  • the study of basic grammar
  • the reading comprehension of simple law-related texts
The CERL reading comprehension level expected at the end of the course is A2-B1

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim is to provide the necessary linguisitic and reading skills to enable students to attend the 3rd year course "Lecture de textes juridiques en néerlandais". 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

No prerequisite, but some basic knowledge is advisable. 

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • Reading comprehension exercises
  • Study and acquisition of basic common and legal vocabulary
  • Identification of specific elements in a sentence/paragraph
  • Various translation activities
  • Study of basic grammar: conjugation, sentence structure, ...
  • Activities on how to use a dictionary effectively

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

2 hours/week during the first term.
Attendance is compulsory. Students are required to prepare activities and exercises on a weekly basis as requested by the teacher. Regular attendance is mandatory.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person


Additional information:

Written exam of 2 hours
This course is not part of the program and the examination is only held once (no 2nd session) before or during the examination period. 
The exam will be based on:
PART 1: Material taught in class: (2/3)

  • Grammar (1/3)
  • Vocabulary, translation, reading comprehension (1/3)
PART 2: Sight texts: (1/3) One or several short sight texts (vocabulary, translation,  reading comprehension,..)   Students will be allowed to use a bilingual dictionary and/or legal dictionary fort part of the exam or the entire exam. However, they are not allowed to use either electronic media or other written media, such as word lists or glossaries. 
If covid regulations do not allow in-person assessments, the examination will be organized by internet.
