Learning unit contents

The course Advanced English for Biomedical Science (LANG5001-A-a) continues the development of reading and listening, data gathering, note-taking, analyzing and synthetizing using, on the one hand, scientific texts or sets of texts and, on the other hand, lectures or reported scientific news in the field of biomedical sciences.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The main objectives for this course are being able to analyze and synthesize English scientific literature and to understand scientific lectures in English, take notes and answer open-ended questions about these lectures.
In this view, we will:

  • review several grammar points in a scientific context,
  • build on Academic English and specific vocabulary,
  • practice reading to become more efficient readers,
  • listen to lectures and take notes to practice our listening skills,
  • do some research, share our findings, collect data, and learn how to synthesize this information,
  • learn how to recognize the structure of a text or lecture,
  • learn how to paraphrase and avoid plagiarism,
  • learn how to write a summary,
  • learn how to recognize attitude and degrees of certainty,
  • learn how to describe a graph.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

English for Medical Science (LANG4001-1) or equivalent.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students will be expected to conscientiously prepare for the scheduled activities in order to be able to take part in them as actively as possible. These activities will feature sharing and comparing collected data with the other participants, continuous checking of learning process, text analysis and note taking.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The course features 2-hour in-class sessions, as long as the sanitary conditions permit it, combined with online exercises posted on eCampus.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

If the sanitary situation deteriorates, classes will be replaced partly by video-conferences on Collaborate (or another platform) and partly by exercises to be completed on eCampus.
Whether in code orange or red, the exam will take place on eCampus, will be made of open-ended questions and will last 3 hours.
The students will of course be updated on any change in the organization of the course and the exam.

Recommended or required readings

The course book is available on eCampus. Online grammar modules are accessible via eCampus as well.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
