Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course has a C1 CEFR level for writing skills. It continues the development of reading, data gathering and note-taking skills, with a particular focus on developing the students' academic writing skills.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- analyse scientific literature in English,
- correctly structure an academic text,
- produce a formal text using correct academic English.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
English Level 2 (taught in the third year of the Bachelor's Degree).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course features about 14 classes.
Each class requires preparation which is essential and mandatory. There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
The focus is on academic writing skills, so there will be written assignments to complete over the semester. These are compulsory tasks. Should students fail to hand in their assignments at the deadline, they will not be allowed to sit the first-session exam.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The in-class course is taught for two hours each week.
Together, preparation, active participation and written assignments during the year account for 45% of the final grade.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Classes will continue to be given on Collaborate or Lifesize and partly by exercises (Wikis, PowerPoint slideshows) available on eCampus until the sanitary situation allows us to meet in class.
The January written exam will take place on eCampus.
Recommended or required readings
Academic Writing for Chemists and Biologists (2020-2021); Students must have the course notes and internet access.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Any session :
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions )
- Remote
written exam ( open-ended questions )
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred remote
Additional information:
Final written exam in January.
Continuous assessment of progress through class participation and various written assignments accounts for 45% of the final grade.
Attendance is compulsory. Students who are absent for more than 30% of the classes without valid justification (e.g. a doctor's note) will not be permitted to sit the exam. The student will consequently be marked as 'absent' for the course.
The classwork mark is always taken into account, regardless of the session.
