Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course is divided into two main parts:
- In-class sessions: thematic files related to the business world (culture, ethics, human resources, etc.), including vocabulary and different types of exercises in order to make students familiar with the themes approached.
- @home sessions: revision of grammar items, listening and reading comprehensions.
Overall, the course will focus on oral and written communication with a revision of the English grammar.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

In agreement with the ILOs, the course aims at developing and strengthening the four language skills (oral and written expression, listening and reading comprehension). The objective is to give the students who do not have a sufficient level of English (or who haven't studied English for some time), the possibility to reach the B2 level (the level usually required to attend the English part 2 course).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students should have the B1 level at least.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course particularly insists on practising English.
It will mainly include:
- Various reading and exercise files based on business-related topics.
- Leaning of texts vocabulary as well as derived vocabulary.
- Listening and reading comprehensions.
- Writing exercises.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The course is taught 2 hours in class and 2 hours online, that is 4 hours a week (2x2h).
Students are required to prepare some exercises at home.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

If the health context does not allow for face-to-face teaching, course materials will be posted on Lol@ so that students can continue their learning at home.
Since a strong emphasis is placed on oral expression, online sessions (Lifesize or Collaborate) will be organized to maintain and improve this essential skill.

In addition, if the restrictions imposed do not allow the organization of graded oral activities, the final grade will be based on the January (written and oral) exam only.

If the January exam were to be taken online, it would consist of the following components:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION:
- Grammar MCQ
- Reading comprehension with a MCQ
- Listening comprehension with a MCQ

ORAL EXAMINATION:
- Discussion with the professor based on questions related to the themes discussed during the semester.

Recommended or required readings

All the course notes will be given in class by the teacher and will also be available on Lol@.
Students will need the following book for the vocabulary tests:
CROSS, B., PERRIN, I., SUSSEL, A. Le Bled: anglais vocabulaire (Hachette éducation: Paris, 2014).

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Oral exam = 40% of the total mark
- 20%: in-class assessment (two business meetings) - 20%: January exam: oral exam in groups
Written exam = 60% of the total mark
- 20%: in-class assessment (two vocabulary tests) - 40%: January exam: vocabulary + an essay based on one of the 'business' topics seen in class + grammar exercises + reading and listening comprehension

In the resit August exam, the entirety of the written exam's material will have to be studied and presented, regardless of the passed/failed parts during the written exam. If one the the two parts (written exm/oral exam) is passed in the first session, the related mark will be maintained in the caulculation of August's mark (except if the student wishes to re-sit the concerned part, in which case the mark obtained in August will automatically replace the first session's, be it better or worse).
The oral exam in second session will be an individual exam with the teacher.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

The course is organised in two sessions of two hours during the first semester (in class and online).

The students who attend this course will automatically have to take the course English 3 - part 2 during the second semester.
