Learning unit contents

- Organisation:

  • 2 hours every week
- Study of the:
  • basic grammar of the Dutch language
  • basic vocabulary of the Dutch language (+/- 1000 most frequent words)
- 10 sections consisting of:
  • listening and reading exercises
  • lexical and grammatical exercises
  • speaking exercises (personal questions, role plays)
  • several written works
- CEFRL levels of the course:
At the end of the first semester:
  • Listening A1
  • Reading A1
  • Speaking A1
  • Writing A1
At the end of the second semester:
  • Listening A2
  • Reading A2
  • Speaking A1+
  • Writing A2

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Being able to use Dutch as an everyday language as well as the basic structures of the Dutch language.
  • Focus on the four language skills: listening and reading comprehension, writing expression and, to a lesser extent, oral expression.
  • Being able to use the communicative functions relative to the themes of study and everyday life (greeting and introducing oneself, talking about one's schedule, one's hobbies, making appointments, ordering a meal...)
  • Level to be reached: A2 of the CEFRL
  • The mastery of level A2 of the CEFRL is a condition to reach level B2 at the end, which is the objective in the KLO's.
Strategy : The course will allow students to demonstrate scientific precision and a critical mind in the analysis of a complex situation.  Communication : The course will allow students to communicate efficiently, internally and externally, about a company, organization or project taking into account the multicultural and international features of their environment. Adaptability : The course will allow students to adapt their managerial practice to the needs of a fast-evolving world being conscious of the societal, economic, political and environmental issues

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None: the course is mainly aimed at students who have never studied Dutch. 

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Each course consists of a combination of: - reading exercises (homework)
- listening exercises
- vocabulary exercises based on the vocabulary from the reading exercises and the listening exercises
- grammar exercises based on structures coming from the reading exercises and/or the listening exercises
- speaking exercises (conversations, roleplays...) around the themes discussed in the reading exercises
  Some vocabulary and grammar exercises, such as translation exercises, will also have to be prepared at home.

Classes based on:

  • a syllabus presenting 10 files around 10 themes in relation to one's everyday life (reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary exercises)
  • grammar reviews
  • a 'Basiswoordenschat' syllabus

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Teaching
A powerpoint presentation with all the answers to the exercises on each week's program will be posted on Lol@ at the end of the week. The answers to some (more difficult) exercises will be presented in podcasts or powerpoint presentation with recorded oral comments.
January Exam
If the evolution of the Covid crisis makes the organisation of face-to-face exams impossible in January, the written exam will take place online, on the platform Lol@ Examens.
Permanent Evaluation
The permanent evaluation is maintained in 'code orange' and 'code red'. Its weight in the global weighting will not be modified: 2/20.
In 'code orange', the students who have a medical / quarantine certificate will be allowed to send their written expression (handwritten) to their teacher by mail.
In 'code red', the written expressions (handwritten) will be handed in via Lol@ ('Devoir').
June exam
If the evolution of the Covid crisis makes the organisation of face-to-face exams impossible in June, the written exam will take place online, on the platform Lol@ Examens.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

1) Exam in January (45%) on the first files of the syllabus 'Dossiers thématiques' and the 'Basiswoordenschat' syllabus, consisting of:
a) grammar and vocabulary exercises b) a reading exercise c) a listening exercise d) a written expression

2) Exam in June (45%) on the last files of the syllabus 'Dossiers thématiques', consisting of:
a) grammar and vocabulary exercises b) a reading exercise c) a listening exercise d) a written expression
  3) continuous assessment (10%) consisting of:
four written expressions, two on themes discussed during the first semester and two on themes discussed during the second semester
The four written expressions have to be given in person to the teacher at one particular course (cf. planning) in order to validate their contribution to the continuous assessment.  
NB(1): All global results (both written examens and continuous assessment) between 9,5 and 9,99 are rounded down to 9/20 for the first as well as for the second session.
NB(2): A student who does not present one part of the exams, obtains 0/20 as a global mark.
