Learning unit contents

Oral and written activities based on texts and articles dealing with education. Students will be required to participate actively in the course, which implies that they must have read the texts before coming to class.
Self-learning module: "Academic English".

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Improving the four language skills, namely reading, listening, speaking and writing.
Enhancing students' ability to cope with English texts (understanding, summarizing, reacting to the content).
Allowing students to speak about various topics related to education through oral presentations and discussions based on the texts of the coursebook.
Allowing students to improve and self-evaluate their progress via a portfolio

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The level of this course corresponds to the European level B2/C1. Students will thus need to have a good basic knowledge of English and a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the preparatory year and 1st-Master's courses.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Workshops - groupwork
Lead-in discussions based on what's in the news
Portfolio as a learning and self-evaluation tool
Thorough preparation is required so as to enable students to progress regularly.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

3-hour class every two weeks in a small group.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

1. Classwork (10/20) => no change regarding the portfolio, the listening comprehension test will be done online (orange code) and the oral presentation will be done in class as announced (orange code) or online (red code).
2. No written exam but a written essay (7/20)
3. Oral exam as announced (orange code) or online (red code).

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
