This seminar is an introduction to research in ancient history :
- by example (exposition of ongoing research)
- by practice (works on sources, critical readings of modern historical works, translations of Latin texts).
Here you will introduce yourself to the practice of the profession of historian: first contacts with the diversity of ancient sources, introduction to the bibliographical research, first concrete applications of the rules of historical criticism in the ancient period...
--> This year, the seminar will be devoted in particular to the civic Roman calendar and to the historical commentary of Book I of Macrobius' Saturnalia.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
During this seminar, the student will begin to familiarize himself with the heuristics in ancient history, with the historical and critical analysis of ancient documents and will practise, for Latin texts, working on the sources in original language.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
To take this course, the student must have (simple co-requisite and not pre-requisite):
- followed the general course Histoire de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine, y compris 15h d'histoire du Proche-Orient (LCLA0015-1);
- have basic notions of classical Latin [= having taken the course of Initiation au latin (LCLA0018-1) or the course of Auteurs latin I (LCLA0018-1)];
- have a good oral and written knowledge of the French language.
In the framework of the Mineure en Antiquité gréco-romaine (blocks 2 and 3), you can complete your training in ancient languages by choosing a course (not otherwise followed) among: LCLA0066-2 : Langue latine I LCLA0070-2 : Langue grecque II (needs to have passed Langue grecque I) LCLA0071-3 : Langue latine II (needs to have passed Langue latine I)
You can also choose, for the course of Traduction de textes, one of the following courses (not otherwise followed): LCLA0065-2 : Langue grecque I LCLA0073-1 : Auteurs latins II (it is advisable to have followed and passed LCLA0018-1 ou LCLA0068-1 beforehand).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The weekly seminar (Monday, 11h-13h, A4 S50, during Q1 ; Wednesday, 11h-13h, A4 S100 during Q2) will alternate work on ancient sources and critical readings of scientific articles or other modern historical works.
Readings of scientific articles and mandatory Latin translation exercises will be requested regularly.
The health situation could lead to changes in the seminar room (follow the bills on the Professor's door).
Some sessions may be suspended in order to enable students to carry out the required exercises in a library.
Bibliographic repetitions in library with an assistant outside of the course sessions. Do not hesitate to ask for help from the student(s)-instructor(s) for advice, additional explanations or additional bibliographic repetitions.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
As long as the health situation (COVID-19) allows it, the Antiquity Exercise I practical seminar will continue to be held in the classroom.
If this becomes impossible, it will of course be given remotely, by visio (and Power Points projected by "screen sharing"). The course materials will be regularly deposited on Ecampus.
In January, the evaluation will be done remotely, without changing the other modalities of the exam (see below "Assessment methods and criteria").
In May-June and August-September, if the assessment were to be done remotely, the modalities would remain unchanged for the translation of Latin and for the commentary on documents related to the theme and/or the historical source tackled this year. The practical examination in bibligraphy in the library would be replaced by an examination in bibligraphy carried out at a distance.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:
January examination: theoretical bibliography examination (tools, ancient sources and modern works), including the analysis of a critical apparatus of a modern academic edition of a textual source from the manuscript tradition.
The examination organised in January, obligatory, will count for 10% of the overall score of the year in case of success (mark superior or equal to 10/20).
In case of failure in January (mark inferior to 10/20), the May-June examination mark (or, in case of failure in May-June, the August-September examination mark) will be worth 100% of the final score.
The evaluation of May/June (and August/September in case of failure) will be based on:
- on the exercises requested throughout the year ;
- on a practical bibliography examination in library :
--> Students who have to resit in the August/September session and who have obtained a mark superior or equal to 10/20 on the May/June practical bibliography examination do not have to retake this practical examination in August/September and keep their May-June mark for this practical examination) ;
- on the (re)translation of one of the Latin texts translated during the year, , with possible grammar questions on the (re)translated passage (oral exam, part 1) ;
- on the historical and critical analysis of a document or a corpus of documents related to the theme and/or the historical sources addressed during the year (oral exam, part 2).
In May-June and August-September, if the assessment were to be done remotely, the modalities would remain unchanged for the translation of Latin and for the commentary on documents related to the theme and/or the historical source tackled this year. The practical bibliography examination in the library would be replaced by a bibliography examination carried out at a distance.
Important note: the correction of the French language is fully part of the evaluation.
