Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This specialized course is in two parts:
(1) Sedimentary basin analysis (sequential analyses, sedimentary models, cyclostratigraphy).
(2) carbonate diagenesis (mineralogy and petrology of carbonate minerals, diagenetic sequences). Methods include petrography, cathodoluminescence, isotopic geochemistry.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
(1) Interpretation of a sedimentary bassin, specially in terms of sea-level variations. What are climatic and orbital cycles, how can we interpret them and use them to improve temporal resolution.
(2) Recognition and interpretation of a diagenetic sequence. Use of cathodoluminescence and isotopic geochemistry.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
GEOL0018-1 Sédimentologie et pétrologie sédimentaire
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures with slides. Study of thin sections of carbonate rocks. At the university or online if necessary
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face, distance learning if requested. Lectures and practical work in B18/B20 or online.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Teaching could switch to online. The transition to online teaching could be in two steps, theoretical teaching would go online first, while practical courses would remain in the microscopy room as long as the sanitary conditions allow. The oral examination will then be scheduled on Lifesize or a similar platform
Recommended or required readings
The slides will be available on MyUlg after each lecture.
Diagenèse et dynamique des bassins sédimentaires: .pdf file.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Any session :
- In-person
oral exam
- Remote
oral exam AND written work
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred in-person
Additional information:
Oral or written examination including the description and interpretation of thin sections of carbonate rocks. The examination is classically at the university but could be switched online depending on the sanitary conditions.
