Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
chapter headings: * 1: introduction and fossilisation-taphonomy * next classses: acritarches-prasinophytes, dinoflagellates, chitinozoans- scolecodonts-spores, foraminifers, ostracodes and other calcareous microfossil, siliceous microfossils and conodonts * last class: applications of micropaleontology (student presentations)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this class, the student will be able to identify the main microfossil groups, and to understand modern analytical methods in micropaleontology, and their applications in paleobiology, paleoecology, paleogeography, paleoclimatology, paleooceanography, astrobiology, biostratigraphy and lithogenesis.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
basic knwledge in geology and biology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
observation of different microfossil groups with microscope and binocular, oral presentation of a scientific paper, and visit of laboratories
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
face to face and online, Praticals face-to-face
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
teaching online (ppt slides and podcast on Myulg)
the practicals are completed but the revision sessions and practiavl exam are canceled because fo the pandemia. the evaluation will be on the theory (80%) (oral exam online) and on the presentation of an article (20%).
Recommended or required readings
powerpoint presentations online (MyULg)
notes distributed at practicals
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
marking:
6o% theory (open questions and definitions)
20% praticals (identification of microfossils with justification, stratigraphic distribution, composition)
20% understanding and oral presentation of a scientific article in front of the class
participation to practicals is mandatory
the theoritical exam will be an oral or written exam, face-to-face or online, depending on the pandemic situation
