Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The objective of this theoretical and practical training is to optimize adequate scientific information search in the field of biomedical sciences, making the best use of the different resources and tools available in libraries and on the web.
Acquired knowledge and skills will prove useful during university education and professional career.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This training will enable students to determine the extent of information needed and access the needed information effectively and efficiently.
This training involves a two-pronged approach:
- a theoretical part, which will enable students (i) to describe the interest and functioning principles of the different resources and tools serving to optimize scientific information search, and (ii) to highlight the importance of critically assessing any information before using it;
- a practical part, which will allow students (i) to test and get used to those tools in order to acquire the necessary independence to meet the numerous needs for information in the course of their studies and, later, during their professional life, (ii) to develop critical approach on available information.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
There are no prerequisites, even if computer literacy and a good knowledge of scientific English features are major assets.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is organized in such a way that everybody can participate actively.
It will consist in in-person classes and practical work or in preparations, depending on the evolution of the COVID-19 sanitary situation.
More practical information will be given during the first course session.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The course starts in the second quarter (February 2021). It is organized so as to encourage students' active participation.
Practical training consists of compulsory online exercises followed by in-class Q-A feedback sessions.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
If the sanitary situation requires it, all courses will be offered online. If necessary, exams will also take place online (eCampus).
Students will be informed in due time of any changes in the way the course will be taught and assessed.
Recommended or required readings
Course notes (Powerpoint slideshows used during lecture classes) as well as all relevant material and podcasts are available on eCampus.
The reference books mentioned in the course notes are available in ULiège Library | Health Sciences - CHU.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Any session :
- In-person
written exam
- Remote
written exam
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred remote
Additional information:
Assessment takes place as a function of the Faculty calendar on computers. In about 80 minutes the students will have to demonstrate their ability to efficiently use information literacy tools (see learning objectives).
More practical information will be given during the first course session.
Written exam assessing knowledge (theory) and know-how (on computer)
There is no automatic entitlement to exemption.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
Detailed information about the course content and organization will be given in the first course session.
