Schedule

Schedule online

Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Part A: Histology
1. The epithelial tissues 2. Glandular epithelia 3. The connective tissues and the cartilage 4. Bone tissue 5. Muscles 6. Nervous tissue and blood
Part B: Cell Physiology
1. Ionic exchanges
2. Cell communications
3. Muscle contraction

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The main aim are :

  • To study the relationships between the structure and the functions of cells
  • To give a general view of the structure of animal tissues
  • To emphasize how the organisation of the tissues confirm their functions
  • To explain mechanisms involved in perception and emission of messages between cells
  • To study molecular mechanisms of muscle contraction

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic notions in cell biology

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Pratical work in cell physiology (ion transports, muscle contraction) is offered.  Instructions to download three softwares are posted on ecampus.
A series of questions is offered on ecampus in order to revise for the practicals; Successful responses to these questions will be taken into account for the final evaluation

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The theorical courses in histology are given in the first quadrimester, on Monday from 9 am to 11 am, in the Great Hall of practical work (1st floor) of the Institute of Zoology (Bldg. I1, quai Van Beneden 22 in Liege). Each theorical course is followed in the same room with a sesion of practical work where students examine different histological preparations illustrating the course.
The Hands-on portion of the course takes place during the last weeks of the first quadrimester at the institute of Botany (B22) or on-line.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

The test will consist of three parts: two written exams on eCampus and an online oral exam. It will start at 8:00 am with the succession of the two online written exams on eCampus: one on physiological material; the other on histological material in the form of a true/false. Only students who have submitted the online written histology exam will be able to present the oral histology exam. The oral histology exam will start on the same day as the written histology exam and will continue on the following days. We will establish an order of passing students for the oral histology exam (on eCampus). For the remote oral histology exam, students will be required to diagnose a histological slice via the cytomine platform. They will be able to prepare their analysis for 20-30 minutes in front of an assistant before coming to submit their answer to me. The online oral exam will last a maximum of 30 minutes per student.
The overall mark will be the average of the marks obtained for each teacher.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

An oral exam will focus on the entire matter of cell physiology and animal histology course (including practical works). The exam will consist of three questions, one of which will be the identification of a histological preparation.
