Schedule: Mondays from 8.00 to 10.00 am.

This course combines a theoretical approach to the basic structures of modern Chinese with a focus on the practical dimensions of communication.
The textbook used  for this course is Méthode de chinois (premier niveau), Isabelle Rabut et al. Students will be required to take part to communication exercises based on daily interaction situations.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course aims at:
- allowing the students to become acquainted with the structures of Chinese sentences; - developing a communication ability in modern Chinese. The focus will be put on oral, listening as well as reading skills.
- At the end of the two semesters of class, the goal is to allow students to become familiar with a series of everyday communication situations as well as to master the basic grammatical structures of modern Chinese.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Work in small groups will fostered for all activites geared towards communication.
As for grammar and lexical explanations, these will be taught ex cathedra by the professor.
Students will learn written Chinese chiefly by using keyboards. Most of the work regarding the production of characters will be done at home by the student.
The following learning activities are planned:
- Presentation of the basic structures of the grammar of the modern Chinese language and exercises related to these concepts;
- Work in small groups around oral expression (if online teaching, this modality will be reduced);
- Frequent use of the ECampus platform for a set of work to be done at home (versions; grammar exercises; stories to be posted on ECampus);
- Home preparation work for grammar and translation exercises;

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

In case the sanitary situation would make the face to face teaching impossible, the following modalities are applied:
The course combines online classes with a range of periodic tasks accomplished by students (written works chiefly, but also readings).
During online classes, the focus is put on strengthening skills in mastering of modern Chinese language grammar.
The students are encouraged to take part actively to the class through exercises focusing on the contents taught online.
The content for this course includes grammar, vocabulary and texts studied during the semester (from introductory lessons to lesson 4, within the coursebook Méthode de chinois.
Written exam.  It will consist in a series of grammar exercices aiming at assessing the mastering by students of the Chinese phrase that will have been studied during the semester/year. 
The content for this course includes grammar, vocabulary and texts studied during the semester within the coursebook Méthode de chinois (translation from French to Chinese; from Chinese to French; the use of interrogative adverbs; etc.). 
Assessment method: online written exam. It will consist in a series of written exercices on the Chinese modern language phrase. 
May-June 2021 session:
- Online written exam;
- schedule: 8 June 2021: 8.00-11.00
- content for the exam: from introductory lessons a and b to lesson 4 from the Méthode de chinois coursebook (premier niveau).

Méthode de chinois (premier niveau), Isabelle Rabut et al, l'Asiathèque.
Additional documents (grammar notes; power point; songs; etc.) will be used and made available to students on ECampus. The use of these materials is intended to facilitate student learning and make learning more dynamic.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

Students will be assessed according to the following criterias:
- basic comprehension skills; - mastering of the basic structures of syntaxes in modern Chinese; - mastering of the basic notions of grammar in modern Chinese language.

The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 50% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
