Written Translation
The course content is based on a wide variety of texts with difficulty levels ranging from 4 to 6 on a 9-point scale. All documents in this medium tier are genuine (i.e. originally written in) Spanish texts selected as per the following four major criteria : (i) the topic (one per week not be be repeated throughout the semester), (ii) the country (texts from major as well as minor Spanish-speaking countries), (iii) the type (opinion, editorial, press review, special report, feature article), and (iv) the relevance of each content with regard to translating (grammar issues, "sister language"-related traps, etc.)
Sight Translation
Text rendering (printed version). Building on techniques acquired in Bac 3.
Major differences as compared to Bac 3 level.
1) Texts are longer but still of average difficulty.
2) Higher priority is given to spoken/oral language, most importantly:
* speech fluency (unexpected pauses, backtracking, etc.) ;
* content accuracy ;
* language registers.
3) More spontaneous and natural rendering.
Each student will have to take the floor two to three times per session, and deals with texts twice as long as in Bac 3.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Through a perfect understanding of the source language (a prerequisite unrelated to this course), the sudent is expected to learn and master a range of techniques designed to overcome difficulties when conveying a message from a source to a target language ; re/activate his/her passive vocabulary, and spontaneously use idiomatic expressions ; acquire strong writing skills, and, be capable, at the end of Bac 3, to translate a difficult text from Spanish into French.

Very good knowledge of the Spanish language, and perfect command of the mother tongue.

Students are expected to keep track of all text analyzes and translations (black list, stock-phrases, miscellaneous "recipes", etc.).
Assessment methods and criteria
Written Translation Final exam is based on a 500-word text to be translated in 180 minutes. The student is allowed to use one French and one Spanish monolingual dictionary. This end of the year assessment focuses on four main criteria: a) meaning, b) grammar, c) style, and d) terminology. Sight Translation Skills acquired in "Bloc 3 (Bac)" & "Bloc1 (Master)" are assessed through the rendering of a 300-word text on current affairs. Eight minutes are granted for preparation. Note: Students are also required to take an exam in French made up of all the issues discussed at this course, as well as TRAD0160-A-a (two-year recap). For instance, the January 2019 exam contained about 100 questions. Important: the grade on the French exam must be higher than or equal to 10 to be computed in the overall grade. The overall grade of 20 for this course disaggregates as follows : 15/15 on the written translation exam, 3/3 on the sight translation exam, and 2/2 on the French language exam.
