Learning unit contents
The texts studied in class mainly focus on the contemporary period. This course also provides students with an introduction to the reading of older Dutch texts. Grammatical difficulties will occasionally be reviewed. Otherwise, practical translation exercises. Each week students will prepare at least one page from a historical text.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the class, the student will be able to understand in detail an authentic (academic) text (source, study) dealing with an historical subject and to translate it into French.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is conceived as a seminar. Attention will be paid to the students' reading skills as well as to the extension of their lexical and grammatical knowledge in Dutch. During the class, the students' translations will corrected and commented upon. The seminar will be supllemented by lectures in which the main points of translation theory as well as the main linguistic features of ancient and modern Dutch historical texts will be discussed.

Assessment methods and criteria
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for one third of the June final grade. Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
- Each week, the students receive a new text (in Dutch, regarding a particular history topic) which they have to translate to French. Each student sends their translation back to the teacher before a given deadline. In turn, the teacher sends a personnal feedback to each student.
Assessment subjects
The students will receive an unseen text.
Assessment methods
Remote examination.
On the day of the exam, the students will receive a text, which they have to translate, as well as a number of comprehension questions. They will have 2 hours to complete their translations and answer the questions, before sending their exam back to the teacher by email.
