Learning unit contents

This coursez will give some tools in the observation and understanding of organisations, their functioning in all its complexity, their internal structures and their environment, as well as the interactions between actors and their power games (cooperation and tensions). 
The first part will address the historic approach of organization studies.
The second part of the course will give an overview over the typology of organisations proposed by Mintzberg and contextualism.
The third part will look in more depth the strategic analysis of organizations by Crozier and Friedberg's work on local orders.
The fourth part of the course will delve into the approch of "sensemaking" developped by Weick and Czarniawska.

Subject matter: 
 
1. Scientific perspectives of work organization and the school of human relations. The development of the analysis of organizations over time.
2. The analysis of organizational configurations (developed by Henri Mintzberg)-this will involve being able to qualify various dimensions of organizations (division of labor, coordination of work, type of authority, qualification of workers, markets, etc.) in order to better understand their form (i.e. their structure, their formal organization) ;
3. strategic analysis of organizations (developed by Michel Crozier and Erhard Friedberg)-based on the concrete study of a bureaucratic organization producing tobacco, we will describe and characterize the different groups of actors making up this organization, their practices, the interactions they establish between them, power games, tensions, etc., i.e. so many informal dimensions in the life of the organization.

Assessment methods

Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ): the exam will consist in a multiple choice questionnaire which will be held via the application eCampus in a limited time frame,  at a distance (online).
