Learning unit contents
The seminar will be organised during the second period of the year . Laurence Bouquiaux, Marc Jacquemain and Frederic Claisse are in charge of this seminar.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This seminar aims to interest students to issues related to science and society relations (from a philosophical, sociological or political point of view).
Problems of nature of scientific work, of influence of science on society, of scientific knowledge of lay people will be studied. Each year a different theme will be chosen.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Students will be in charge of organizing seminars on basis of lectures or readings.
Specific topic for 2017-2018 will draw on the notion of "rational beliefs" and there will be - among others - a focus on creationism.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
All the students have to attent the first course in order to organise the seminar.

Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation will be based on the quality of the work done during workshops or seminars : quality of presentation, participation to to the discussion. Each student will have to produce a short synthesis document.

Assessment subjects
Students will be evaluated on the basis of their group work and of the questions/comments to the other groups about their work (see below, "Methods of evaluation")
Assessment methods
Students will be evaluated on the basis of :
1) their group work, consisting in the slides of a Powerpoint presentation. Groups are asked to privilege simplicity, clarity and readability. Slides will be completed, if necessary, by a few words of explanation
Slides of the Powerpoint presentation will be sent in by Wednesday May 20, then forwarded by the Professors to the other groups.
2) interactions (questions and comments) with the other groups and Professors about the group works.
Questions and comments will be sent in for Wednesday June 10.
