Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The purpose of this seminar is to present the statistical system introduced at European level to monitor the developments on the labour market and, thereby, the achievement of the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy. At Belgian level, the focus will be on the various statistics produced by Statbel.

What is measured, how and why? These questions will be the guiding threads throughout the presentation. These questions will allow the constructivist aspects of the statistical process to be addressed. In other words, this exercise will be an opportunity to deconstruct the classical statistical approach in order to better understand the inputs, limitations and dangers.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the seminar, the students will be able to identify, use, analyse and assess figures from European, federal and regional public statistics and this for the various issues addressed.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Realization of Excel tables, basic knowledge in descriptive statistics: average, median, mode, etc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This seminar is intended to be practical. The focus will be on the presentation and use of the various tools that provide access to European, federal and regional public statistics.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The seminar will be participative.

Recommended or required readings

The powerpoint of the seminars are available for download via MyULg before each class session. A reading portfolio in pdf format can also be downloaded via MyULg at the first class session. These documents serve as support for the seminar and are therefore optional.
