- Definition of health, public health, primary care, community health.
- Introduction to the history of public health.
- Introduction to the "One Health" concept.
- Introduction to ethical issues in public health.
- Identification and prioritization of problems and health needs: health needs, health indicators, surveys, consensus, sources of data on health status.
- Introduction to health determinants.
- Introduction to health promotion and prevention.
- Introduction to health education.
- Introduction to Sustainable Development.
- Introduction to planning, programming and evaluation in health.
- Introduction to International Public Health.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
General objectives
- Learn basic concepts in the field of public health and develop an identity for Public Health.
- Knowing the evolution of health and public health concepts and take a critical review of different definitions of health and public health.
- Make connection between different concepts integrated into the public health concept.
- Identify and prioritize problems and needs in public health.
- Identify the stages of planning, programming and public health evaluation.
- Knowing the great quality principles for any action in public health.
- Identify the skills and actors in the landscape of the Belgian and international public health.

Recommended or required readings
There are no lecture notes. A PowerPoint presentation and a reading portfolio will be provided to students on "MyULiège".
Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination with questions on the course material and on the reading portfolio. The questions will take the form of multiple choice questions (MCQ) and/or matching questions.
Closed book exam.
