Controversial issues in metaphysics
The question of stupidity (bêtise)
What is stupidity? Is it only a mere lack of intelligence or should we see it as a radical structure of thought? Is it only an accident of the life of the spirit or an object that metaphysics can (and must) elaborate? This course would like to show how the question of stupidity gradually imposed itself during the nineteenth century and then took ia metaphysical form in the next century - theory of matter or substance, nothingness and evil, self and individuation - generating an intense conceptualization which, in turn, will shed light on its most current and deleterious manifestations. Both political and metaphysical, anthropological and psychological, empirical and transcendental, stupidity infests all fields of thought and speech.
The course will review the great theoreticians of stupidity and give this examination the form of a disputatio, setting Deleuze and his critics (Derrida, Alain Roger) on the basis of the portaits of stupidity delivered by literature (Flaubert, Barthes, Gombrowicz).
Sometimes distracting, sometimes frightening, is not stupidity an intimate dimension of thought and at the same time the possible place of its annihilation?

Assessment methods and criteria
Seminar on ontology
During the year, students will have to prepare each session by reading a paper (which will be provided a fortnight before the session).
On the basis of this reading, they will have to write a question to be asked to the speaker. This question should be sent to the teachers two days before the session. Sending these questions is a necessary condition for being allowed to take the final exam. They will be taken into account within the final mark.
The final exam will rest on a written essay (to be sent before the 30th of May or the 16th of August).
This (40 to 50 thousands signs long) essay should deal with some topic strongly related to the theme of the seminar and it must take into consideration what has been said at the seminar.
The essay must use secondary sources and question the authors it is dealing with.
Students are advised to discuss the topic of their essay with the teachers as soon as possible. A title and abstract of the paper should be handed in before the 15th of March 2019.
Controversial issues in metaphysics
A 20-30 min presentation on a book (or a part of a book) dedicated to stupidity, in agreement with the teacher. A list of works will be provided at the beginning of the course.
