Ability to use logical calculus and/or informal analysis of arguments in order to estimate the correction of reasonings.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Secondary education. Good command of french language.

Oral presentation, reference book, e-learning website, exercice classes with an older student.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course (45h) will take place during the first term (September-December)
1) from the 16th of September to the 16th of December 2019 : on mondays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Room : PHILO II.
2) from the 30th of October to the 18th of December 2019 : on wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Room : GOTHOT.

Reference book : BOUQUIAUX L. et LECLERCQ B., Logique formelle et argumentation, Bruxelles, De Boeck, 3rd edition, 2017.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in January and September. The exam may also be taken in June by first year students.
No student will be allowed to take the exam on another day than the other students.
 
On mondays, at the beginning of each lecture will be organized a brief optional test on the subject of the preceeding lecture.
In November and December will be organized optional tests on propositional logic and predicate logic, respectively. They will not be taken into consideration for the final mark unless the student does better in this test than in the corresponding part of the exam.
As far as the "argumentation theory" part is concerned, a short (optional) essay, which should be uploded to e-campus board before Thursday the 19th of December 2019, could exempt the student from two questions of the written exam (counting for 3,33 points out of 20). This essay (1 page ; around 3 to 4000 signs) will consist in evaluating some reasoning (produced after July 2019 !) spotted in the media (and which must be provided with accurate information on its source); the evaluation requires a brief theoretical analysis, critical questions and a well-argued reply. Organisation of the thought, clarity and accurateness of the expression, correct language are part of what will be marked. December 19 is the deadline after which no essay will be taken into consideration. Results will be released on Friday the 27th of December.
