Learning unit contents

Part 1 is focused on problem solving in mathematics.
Several themes are developed including the role of problems in teaching and learning mathematics,  teachers' beliefs, students' difficulties, the features of problem solving for learners from 5 to 14 years old, the importance of problems solving in the external assessments in mathematics (CEB / CE1D, PISA, ...),...

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will understand the underlying theoretical foundations of the different themes and better understand some aspects of the cognitive development of pupils towards mathematics learning to :
- identify issues related to problem solving ; - (better) interpret errors, difficulties and informal strategies of students - take a critical look at different teaching and learning activities and at different systems of assessment of knowledge and competencies in mathematics.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The methodology will consist of alternating theoretical presentations, analyses of student productions and analyses of teaching / learning activities.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is organized in the form of face-to-face modules of 3 hours each, including theoretical course and the follow up of the practical work.
The course is completed by the realization of a practical work and a written report.
