Learning unit contents
Several field of research contribute to the anaysis of educational issues: history of education, sociology, economy, psychology, comparative education, docimology... The course will use several of these fields to analyse the school failure, and in particular on the grade repetition issue. Mechanisms which contribute to school failure and its individual and social consequences will be analyzed. Students will have to analyze a problem using several levels of analysis: the individual (student), the group (class) and the system (the education system). They will discover a variety of scientific tools to collect and analyze data in psychology and education sciences. They will discover how a research tradition of almost 60 years has evolved and now more than ever its pertience in the education system of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end the course, the students will have to be able
1. To investigate an educational issue having individual and collective incidences:
- by referring to the theories of the education sciences
- by basing itself on various methodologies and scientific tools
- by basing itself on a diversity of educational contexts
2. To analyze the stakes and the societal effects of educational practices
3. To interpret research results such as they are presented in scientific studies

The assessement is based on
- the content taught during the oral presentations;
- the corresponding power points and documents;
- Marcel Crahay's book
The assessment will be a written examamination (True/False format).
