Learning unit contents

Physiology and biochemistry of the marine animals

The course consists in a litterature research to be realised either by each student or by groups of students according to the total number of students
The topic concern the adaptation of marine animals to physico-chemical and/or biological constraints of their environment. It will consider species or zoological groups in the marine world or in specific micro-environments.
The topic will be choiced by the students under guidance and agreement of the teacher. 
The work will be a written report of 10-15 pages followed by an oral presentation (with ppt support) facve to the other students

Aquariology

Aquarium is a closed system considered as an artificial ecosystem. Building and maintenance are considered, in particular :
* Materials * Light * Water chemistry * Filtration (Life Support System) * Food end feeding * Transportation of live animals * ...
Practical applications of these techniques include recreational basins, research facilities and public aquaria, which play a role in communicating scientific knowledge among diverse audiences.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Physiology and biochemistry of the marine animals

Learn about the environmental constraints of the marine world and the variety of habitats. These constraints are physico-chemical depending on geographic position and depth (T°, pressure, pH, salinity, light, water currents, tides,...) or biological (du to interactions with other organisms).
Apprehend the variety of marine environments from the most extended to the most extreme with their respectives constraints.
Apprehend the adaptations of the organisms in answer to these constraints at different levels, from the species to the genes. Thes adaptation concern behavior, anatomy, sensory organs, structural characteristics, physiology (functions), cell capabilities, biochemistry, genes and the regulation of their expression. 

Aquariology

Give to students knowledge and competence to perform maintenance, reproduction, and use of aquatic species in closed environment (freshwater and seawater). Teaching intended for the students in aquaculture, oceanography or biology.
Show them the needs, capabilities and roles of public aquariums.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Bachelor in Sciences

Aquariology

Basic scientific knowledge, level Bachelor in Biology (or similar).
Clemency towards a teacher of good will, but anglophone by necessity.

1st lecture : General introduction : Why, when, where Public Aquarium ? Guided tour of our Aquarium, with emphasis about its roles in public education (M. Bournonville, Assistant Curator & Ch. Michel)
2nd lecture : How to build, enlight, heat or cool and aerate an aquarium ? Main considerations about water quality. (Ch. Michel)
3d lecture : How to maintain water quality ? How do we obtain and take care of animals ? (Ch. Michel)
4th lecture : Conclusion, last questions, preparation of examination. Guided tour of our Aquarium facilities behind the scenes, with animal feeding (M. Bournonville, Assistant Curator & Ch. Michel)
