Learning unit contents

The course introduces the specificities of qualitative approaches through steps in a scientific research (data collection, analysis and interpretation). Grounded theory method (GTM) is introduced as a generic formalisation of qualitative research.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The student will be able to:


  • given a research question, decide whether a qualitative or a quantitative approach is relevant,
  • accurately define qualitative terms,
  • designate a qualitative phenomenon.

  • Theorical sessions are ex cathedra teaching, using slides.
  • Practical work consists in realizing a qualitative research in teams (elaborating a research question, conducting and analysis of an interview).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face to face for theoretical lessons and practical work.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

  • Lectures are given through podcats, following the initial planned course schedule.
  • Pratical sessions are maintained and organized through online class rooms; the teaching assistant vistis the team classroom during each session.

Assessment subjects

This year, the course will not cover how to draw a properties table and how theoretical sampling may rest on different fields (formal analysis).

Assessment methods

  • The written examination is cancelled.
  • Only practical works will be evaluated (on the criteria exposed in the hereabove dedicated section).
  • Delivery date for final conclusions becomes May 15 (instead of May 7).
