Learning unit contents

Introduction to Old and Middle French; translation and explication of literary texts useful to historians or art historians as sources.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will acquire a solid base in Old and Middle French which will allow them to understand and analyse sources in the original language.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students will be required to actively participate in the lecture, by reading and translating the core course texts.

Seminar.

Recommended or required readings

Textes and full bibliography will be provided during the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam: reading, translation and commentary of one of the excerpts read during the course. General questions about the core course contents.
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 10% of the June final grade if > or = 10/20 (the mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20). Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative.

Organizational remarks

Students in Bac 2HAA can choose to take this course instead of either Traduction et explication de textes historiques : anglais I or Traduction et explication de textes historiques : allemand I. However, students must demonstrate beforehand their proficiency in English or German; a test is given in October for this purpose.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

- supervisions (1h per week for each student, videoconferences on Lifesize) - exchange of course material (bibliography, images, online ressources, exercises)

Assessment subjects

- reading and translation of the Bestiaries analysed in the course - presentation and discussion of authors, texts, textual and visual traditions analysed in the course

Assessment methods

- assessment of presentations and essays realised during the course - oral examination on Lifesize (timetable to be agreed with the course delegates right after the end of the course) In the case in which one or more students do not dispose of a stable internet connexion, an alternative solution will be agreed during the week following the end of the course.
