Learning unit contents

Argumentation training both in its written and spoken form: how to produce a consistent train of thoughts based on a methodical structuring of ideas/arguments, as well as the use of logical links. Teaching of the vocabulary required to achieve this goal. All material used to this end will come from print media.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Ability to understand and thus analyze, as well as comment on Spanish texts dealing with everyday subject matters.
Ability to ask simple, as well as complicated questions.
Ability to answer questions that require both short and more elaborate answers.
Ability to summarize any content in Spanish after reading it several times.
Ability to give a short speech on a given subject matter.
Ability to hold a nuanced conversation (fear, doubt, confidence, disagreement, etc.)

Good knowledge of the Spanish language.

Oral and written expression based exercises.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam (40%): a. 500-word essay on any one topic dealt with in class ; b. test on the in-class content, i.e the vocabulary.
Oral exam (40%): questions on chapters of a mandatory reading book. The student will be asked to get his/her thoughts organized by using logical links as learned in class, as well as a fluent and structured Spanish language.
In class oral presentation (20%): any topic.
Fall exams: The student only needs to retake any part(s) of the written and/or oral exams on which s/he got a grade lower that 10/20 in the Spring session.
