Dutch linguistics I

This course has two main objectives: on a theoretical level, it aims at analysing some syntactic constructions that are particularly problematic for French-speaking learners of Dutch; on a practical level, its aim is to further develop the communication skills (both receptive and productive skills) of the students in Dutch.
In the theoretical part, we will tackle some syntactic constructions that are particularly problematic for French-speaking learners of Dutch, including er, pronominal adverbs and passive constructions..
In the practical part, we will train the communicative skills of the students by organizing the following activities:

• reading and listening comprehension exercises;
• essay-writing; 
• the composition of a portfolio.

Dutch language practice II

The course develops the four skills in Dutch by means of practical reading, listening, writing and speaking (with and without interaction) activities based on tests and real audiovisual material taken from the Dutch-speaking media. By analyzing the supporting material, the students will be requested to ensure that they have a deep understanding of all the nuances and cultural references as well as implicit messages understood in the texts and audiovisual extracts. To ensure correct expression, a basic revision of the grammar is provided. Given the practical nature of the activities, active and regular participation is paramount.

At the end of this course, the students will be able:

• to describe general principe of Dutch syntax;
• to describe and explain how word the syntactic constructions we discussed work in Dutch;
• to analyze these constructions in an original article;
• to write a coherent essay on a general topic (B2 level)
• to understand specialized texts (B2+ level)
• to follow a natural conversation in Dutch (B2 level)

By the end of the course, the student will be capable of :
- understanding and correctly transcribing the content of authentic audiovisual material with an average to high difficulty level taken from the Dutch press;
- locating explicit and implicit messages contained in the written and audiovisual documents.
The student will also be capable of using correct language (both orally and in writing) to:
- summarize and comment on texts with a medium to strong difficulty level taken from the Dutch press;
- explain and paraphrase (sections of) documents;
- explain in his or her own words the nuances, ideas and cultural references contained in the supporting materials;
- apply the grammar and vocabulary covered in specific exercises (lesson topics, grammar exercises) and, in an integrated way, to all written and oral work produced.

The course includes formal lectures which will be as interactive as possible on the one hand and practical sessions on the other.

• specific difficulties of Dutch, grammar and ecercises
• reading exercises to be prepared at home: explain and/or paraphrase complex passages, answer questions based on the content of texts/vocabulary such as defining words, searching for synonyms and antonyms, and identifying the correct meaning of polysemic words based on the context of the supporting material
• comprehension and listening exercises
• speaking exercises: presentations, debates...
• essay writing
• e-Tandem project
• self-study

Face-to-face mode of delivery.
Sessions of two hours a week.
Alternation of theoretical and practical sessions.

Face-to-face and work to be prepared at home and/or in group.

Dutch linguistics I

The evaluation will include a written and an oral exam. The written exam will include:

• a writing proficiency task (essay writing);
• a vocabulary test.

• the linguistic analysis of the portfolio;
• the vocabulary of the portfolio;
• the content of the portfolio (discussion).

• Application of ther theory (10%). Oral exam on the basis of the portfolio;
• Lexical knowledge (10%). Written exam (vocabulary treated during the practical sessions) and vocabulary from the portfolio (at the oral exam).
• Portfolio (30%)
• Oral proficiency (25%). oral exam
• Writing skills (25%). written exam

Dutch language practice II

• 10% of the marks : continuous assessment (questions and work during the academic year, e-Tandem)
• 30% of the mark : January exam (written and oral exam)
• 30% of the marks: written exam in June: essay-writing, grammar, reading and listening comprehension, translation of sentences from French into Dutch by applying the grammar and vocabulary covered during the academic year
• 30% of the marks: oral examination: based on a collection of press articles and essays, the student will be orally examined on the subject content and vocabulary.
• Attention: students must pass both exams in June.
