Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course will explore recent literary depictions of vampires, mermaids, aliens, genetically enhanced beings, AI, and dogs with human consciousness. We will examine the ways in which authors have employed and reinterpreted these figures to depict marginalised identities and to interrogate power structures relating to ethnicity, race, gender, and sexuality. This will also involve considering the significance of these figures' historical transformations and geographical relocation through examining a broad range of literature, film, television series, and music.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will comprehend the history and development of these fantastical beings. They will expand their knowledge of speculative fiction by appreciating the significance of the ways in which African American and Caribbean writers have developed this genre. Through an appraisal of relevant postcolonial theory, students will develop the necessary skills to critically analyse the texts on this course.
