Learning unit contents

Theory of Dutch phonetics (with numerous exercises on pronunciation exercises and phonetic transcription), including terminology. The theory of Dutch syntax (basic principles of constructing sentences and syntactic analysis, with numerous exercises), including terminology. Widening the vocabulary (including prepositions, abbreviations, expressions and proverbs) with numerous exercises. Reading and comprehension of texts taken from Dutch and Flemish newspapers. Oral expression (conversation) and written expression (summaries, compositions). Revision of basic Dutch morphology with numerous exercises.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic concept of Dutch. If required, this course can be linked to other curriculum coures: Subsequently: Dutch Language II.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practical work: repetitions, language lab work. Pronunciation and conversation exercises with the teaching assistant. Revision of basic grammar and composition correction with the teaching assistant.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Timetable and session: 90 hours (30 hours of theory and 60 hours of practical work) - 1st and 2nd quarter.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination in January; written and oral exam in the June and September sessions. 
The mark of the midterm exam in January (vocabulary and grammatical terminology) will count for 15% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it does not reach 10/20; on the oppsite, if the January mark is = or > 10/20, then it will added to the June mark.
Continuous evaluation throughout the academis year: 4 essays (2 essays per semester), which are part of the class's continuous evaluation
The different components of the class have the following weight:

  • Language profiency: 50% (20% for written language proficiency, 20% for oral language proficiency, 10% for vocabulary)
  • Grammar (theory and exercices): 40%
  • Continuous evaluation: 10%
The final grade is based on the weighted mean for the different components of the class.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

The following techniques will be used:
- Annotated Powerpoint-presentations, enriched with on-line bibliographical references and links to on-line references which will help the students understand the course. As far as the chapter on phonology is concerned, which was at the core of Q2, a pdf-version of the manual "Uitspraakleer Nederlands voor Franstaligen" has been made available on MyULiege since the beginning of the academic year.
- On-line work sessions during which the Powerpoint presentations and the students' questions will be discussed 
- On-line exercises on the basic grammar and vocabulary (+ essay writing)
- Discussion forum

Assessment subjects

The evaluation will focus on the following aspects:
- Knowledge and mastery of the syntax studied in Q1: terminology, main rules, contrastive aspects, lost frequent errors of French-speaking learners, exercises.
- Basics of Dutch pronunciation (Q2): speech production, difference between phonetics/phonology, speech anatomy, terminology, assimilation processes, main segmental and prosodic caracteristics of standard Dutch with speacial attention to (1) the differences and similarities with French (cf. the passages with < FR > in the margin in the book Uitspraakleer Nederlands voor Franstaligen), (2) the pronunciation problems of French-speaking learners of Dutch, and (3) the pronunciation difference between Belgian Dutch and Netherlandic Dutch.
- Mastery of the basic grammar and vocabulary (essay writing)

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an on-line written exam in two parts:
- Part 1 consists of an on-line written exam on the basics of Dutch syntax (Q1) and phonology (Q2): theory, exercises, with special emphasis on (1) the Dutch-French contrastive aspects and (2) the main difficulties of French-speaking learners of Dutch.
- Part 2 consists of the writing of an essay on a subject related to the texts in the syllabus. The evaluation will focus on the students' mastery of the Dutch basic grammar, as well as on their knowledge and adequate use of the vocabulary of the texts in the syllabus.
The final grade will also take into account the intermediary evaluations (essays) during the academic year.
