Learning unit contents

After an introduction concerning papyrus and the history and technique of papyrology, the course covers, with originals and photographs, various aspects of this documentation and its problems (provenance, dating, materials, writing, deciphering, identification). Research using a computer is also taught.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To know the material conditions of the copy, the edition, the diffusion and the transmission of Greek and Latin literary texts in antiquity, and their consequences on the conception, the presentation and the conservation of literary works.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Ability to read Greek.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

To prepare the deciphering and translation of several Greek and Latin literary papyri

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

30 hours (first quadrimester); 2 hours a week.
