Schedule

Learning unit contents
The course focusses on teaching students the finer points of academic writing. Students will study theory, analyse authentic academic materials and apply this knowledge to produce written academic texts.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- analyse English scientific literature,
- produce an abstract for a scientific article,
- critically analyse a scientific paper,
- write a structured article.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Advanced English for Biomedical Science (taught in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science) i.e. LANG5001-1 and LANG5002-1, or equivalent.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course includes 15 classes. Each class requires preparation which is essential and mandatory.
There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
There will be several written assignments to complete over the semester. Some of these assignments will be corrected and/or graded and handed back to the student. An in-class mock exam will be organized on November 27th 2019, and each student will be asked to present the subject of his or her essay in class on November 28th 2019. Participation in these activities is always taken into account in the total grade in both the first and second exam session.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for 15 2-hour classes.
Recommended or required readings
Advanced English for Biomedical Research: Writing (2019-2020) course notes are compulsory, as is Internet access to eCampus.
Assessment methods and criteria
The student will be assessed through a written exam in January (produce a written abstract of a scientific article, correctly answer grammar and theory questions, and produce a short opinion piece on a specific subject), and continuous evaluation of progress through preparation and individual assignments.
The student's overall grade (/20) will be calculated as follows:
- Completion of online grammar modules (GABi) - 1/20
- Production and presentation of a Venn diagram - 1/20
- General participation (mock test, in-class written assignments, etc.) - 1/20
- Graded written assignment due on December 19, 2019 - 4/20
- Written exam 13/20

Assessment subjects
Given that the second session exam must happen online and last no more than 2 hours, it will be limited to the part "Reading comprehension and abstract writing". The grammar and vocabulary skills acquired in class will be evaluated through this writing exercise. The students will not be asked to write an opinion piece.
The exam will consist in producing a 250-word abstract for a 3-page research article. The exam will last 2 hours. The students will be able to download the research article at the beginning of the exam on eCampus, and will then be able to upload their abstract typed in a word document on eCampus.
Assessment methods
The student's overall grade (/20) will be calculated as follows:
- Continuous evaluation of progress through preparation and individual assignments (already graded) (7/10)
- Written exam 13/20
