Learning unit contents

21 hour course
The course is only given in the first semester.
The course is internet-based. Tasks are posted on eCampus each week, and students are required to complete each one by the set deadline. Tasks include:
- theory and exercises adapted to improving your academic English skills and developing a better understanding of the various characteristics of academic writing;
- Written assignments based on listening comprehension and reading comprehension tasks;
- Producing a written report based on a topic of the student's choice (related to his or her domain).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:




  • write a clear, smoothly-flowing text with an appropriate style and a logical structure;
  • present a description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective, logical structure;
  • Write formal, academic English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

This course is the continuation of last year's course, so the level corresponds to the European level C1+. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students will concentrate on fine-tuning their writing skills and the activities will include:


  • Practice in using grammar and domain-specific vocabulary in short written texts and adapted exercises;
  • Theory behind producing academic written work and practice.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Distance learning via eCampus. 
Students are required to read theory and complete homework as required. This course will focus on written academic English.

As the course is given online, the material (theory, exercises, Powerpoint slides, etc.) can all be found on eCampus.

Produce an abstract for an unseen scientific article from your field of study.

A written report of 8-12 pages (double-spaced) written in academic English (free choice of subject, but students are strongly advised to write a report based on their final dissertation which could be useful to them in the future).

Assessment methods

Students who passed the exam in January simply have to hand in the report as per the instructions on eCampus. The final deadline for the report is August 17th. The report should be sent by mail.
Students who did not take the exam and did not submit a report must complete both tasks. The report should be submitted by e-mail by August 17th.
The written exam will consist of writing an abstract for an unseen academic article. The student will have a total of three hours to complete the task, which should allow for connection issues. The written exam will take place on August 21st at 2pm via eCampus.
