Learning unit contents

The course is entitled "Level D English for students in Psychology and Speech Therapy [Partim 2]" and includes the following:
- Continued practise of listening skills
- Continued development of critical thinking skills;
- Developing a better understanding of the characteristics of academic writing;
- Note-taking and summarising skills.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Perfecting reading, writing, and listening skills in the domain of psychology. By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
. understand authentic spoken English;
. use written language flexibly and effectively to summarise a speech;
. formulate ideas and opinions with precision;
. express themselves in clear, well-structured texts.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The level of the course corresponds to the European level C1. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree (from Remédiation to Level C) or a suitable equivalent.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course uses a dynamic and interactive approach to learning English for specific purposes and is targeted directly at students studying for a Master's degree in Psychology and Speech Therapy.

The methods and activities used will involve:
. specific work on academic writing skills and critical thinking;
. the transmission of grammar and vocabulary through language practice and adapted exercises;
. using correct grammar and speciliazed vocabulary in  writing.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Three 2hr modules & 1 1.5hr module given over the second semester of the academic year.
- written assignments to be completed at home (see e-Campus for details).

Compulsory reading:  Level D English [Partim 2] PowerPoints and documents (available module by module on eCampus - theory, exercises and feedback).
Recommended reading:

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

There are no significant changes to the course itself. Extra exercises have been uploaded, but these are entirely optional.
Submission dates for written work remain the same.

Assessment subjects

The subject matter remains the same, given that no new material has been seen since March 12th.

Assessment methods

The exam will take place on May 29th as announced.
The exam will be designed to take 2 hours, but students will be allowed 3 hours to hand in the final version (9:00 - 12:00).
The link for a video will be sent to the group at 9:00. The students should send their written summary of the video via the eCampus platform (information to follow), but e-mailed summaries will also be accepted.

Assessment methods

The exam will take place on August 21st at 9:00.
The exam should take no longer than two hours, but students will have a total of three hours to complete the task. The exam should be submitted by 12:00.
A video link will be available from 9:00. The task is to watch the video and write a summary of the content. The final summary should be submitted via eCampus, although e-mailed summaries sent to the teacher will be accepted for students who experience problems with the platform.
