Learning unit contents

In order to be able to follow the courses taught in English in their future Master degree, students must be able to: - understand and summarise information - make presentations - take part in seminar activities - write a report By covering some units of Market Leader Upper-Intermediate and Advanced, students will have to practise the 4 skills (reading and listening comprehension, speaking and writing).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

In agreement with the ILOs, the course aims at consolidating the B2 level and reach the C1 level thanks to a variety of activities covering the four skills.
In practice:
-Speaking: the student will be able to express themselves fluently on business and economic topics, hold a meeting and make a presentation.
- Writing: the student will have to be able to deliver a high quality essay, using accurate and professional vocabulary and correct grammar structures.
- Reading: the student will have to be able to understand an unseen press article, and summarize it, rephrase the information, comment on it and answer questions about its contents.
- Listening: the student will have to be able to understand and extract the message of an unseen video or audio extract, and render the information in their own words or answer questions about the contents of the extract.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students must have a B2 level.

Variety of activities: discussions, vocabulary exercises, listening and reading comprehension, case studies and presentations.

Face-to-face teaching.

Recommended or required readings

The course is based on units of Market Leader Upper-Intermediate and Advanced. The notes are given in class as well as press articles for further reading found in the English-speaking press. Links to videos are also proposed on Lol@.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final mark is calculated on the basis of the following assignments and tests:
In-class assignments:
- a presentation and a case study: 10% - a commentary: 5%
Written exam (listening and reading comprehension and an essay): 45%
Oral exam : 40%
In second session, the entirety of the written exam's material will have to be studied and presented, regardless of the passed/failed parts during the written exam. If one the the two parts (written exm/oral exam) is passed in the first session, the related mark will be maintained in the caulculation of August's mark (except if the student wishes to re-sit the concerned part, in which case the mark obtained in August will automatically replace the first session's, be it better or worse).

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

Students are distributed in groups of 20. Groups 1, 2 and 3 will meet in the first semester on Wednesday mornings, group 4 (and 5 if necessary) will meet in the second semester.
Important:Students taking English part 1 must take English part 2 in the second semester.
The exam of groups 1, 2 and 3 will take place in January, the exam of groups 4 and 5 will be held in June.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Distance learning
Students are required to work on the material communicated to them via the LOla HEC platform, i.e. the "Crisis Management" and "Ethics" units. 

Assessment subjects

The evaluation will be made in written form from home. 
It will be based on a corpus (series of texts and videos) communicated to the students during the week of 20 April. The preparation of this corpus must be carried out before the day of the exam, and students may have their notes throughout the exam. 
The exam will take the form of multiple choice questions, true/false, short answers, and other possible questions. 
Further information about the exam will be communicated to students via the LOla news forum in the LANG2942-1 course. 
 

Assessment methods

The student's final average will be calculated as follows: 
Oral proficiency (case study done in person in February): 10%.
Written proficiency (June exam): 90%.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the Aug-Sept 2020 session

Assessment subjects

The evaluation will be done online in written and oral forms. 
The written exam will be based on a corpus (set of texts and videos) communicated to the students beforehand. The preparation of this corpus must be done before the day of the exam, and the students may have their notes throughout the exam. 
The exam will include content questions, such as multiple choice, true/false, short answers, and others. Moreover, opinion/reflection questions will require answers written in more complete paragraphs. 
The oral exam will be based on the preparation of a text communicated to the student a few minutes before the exam. The student will then be given a specific amount of time to work on the text so that it can be discussed. 
Further information about the exam will be communicated to students via the LOla news forum of the LANG2942-1 course. 

Assessment methods

The student's final average will be calculated as follows: 
- Oral proficiency: 50%.
- Written competence: 50%.
