Adaptability:

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

This course is not a beginners'course. Students should have a good basic knowledge (secondary/ high school level or ALTE level 1 or Council of Europe level A2) of both grammar rules (revised during the preparatory courses) and elementary vocabulary.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is divided into two main parts: a grammar review on the one hand (with the syllabus English level 1), and an introduction to business vocabulary on the other hand (with the Business Partner).
The exercises are integrated in the course and do not make up a separate course. They include grammar exercises, listening and reading comprehension as well as communication activities based on the Business Partner. The course requires active participation on the students' part, notably during in-class exercises and case studies organised in groups.
The student will also have to study a part of the basic vocabulary from "Le Bled", on which he will be interrogated at the mid-term tests as well as at the exams in January and June.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is taught 3 hours a week in groups of about 50-60 students. The students will be divided according to their level of English; a placement test (COMPULSORY) will be organised on Friday 20th September in class.
Students will be given homework (grammar exercises and activities from the Business Partner).

FIRST SESSION
The following parts will be taken into account in the calculation of the final mark:
  a) January's written exam (25%) :

  • grammar (first semester's grammar revisions)
  • vocabulary (first semester's Business Partner units + units 1 to 15 in the "Bled")
NB: students will be given the possibility to re-sit January's part in June. This exam will be organized on the same day as June's, at another time.
  b) June's written exam (25%) :
  • grammar (second semester's grammar revisions)
  • vocabulary (second semester's Business Partner units + units 16 to 28 + 80 &84 in the "Bled")
  c) oral exam (30%): "Business meeting" = in groups, meeting simulation based on a case study. This assessment will be organized on Saturdays (March/April)
  d) "skills" tests that included a reading and a listening comprehension :
  • end of first semester (10%)
  • end of second semester (10%)
_____________________________________________________
NB: "ABSORBING FAILURE": any failed exam part (below a full 10/20) in June will have to be taken again in second session (August). This rule applies to :
- the written exams (average of January + June);
- the oral exam (= business meeting).

  SECOND SESSION
The following parts will be taken into account in the calculation of the final mark:
  a) written exams (50%) : grammar / vocabulary (both semesters)
b) oral exam (30%) : business meeting
c) skills tests (20%) : reading and listening comprehension
NB: among the three parts mentioned above, those which are not failed in June (above 10/20) will still be taken into account in the calculation of the second session's final note (except if students wish to re-take the concerned parts, in which case the mark obtained in August will replace June's, be it better or worse).
