Learning unit contents

CEFRL levels of the course: Listening A1+ Reading A1+ Speaking A1+ Lecturing A1+ Writing A1+
This course is organized around concrete situations related to everyday life and professional life:

  • touching topics such as an appointment, time, jobs, work, the restaurant, the computer, holidays,...
  • exercising skills such as introducing oneself, welcoming a visitor, following/giving simple instructions, situating and describing objects,... 
  • studying dialogues and texts while progressively integrating linguistic and grammatical structures

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To acquire a good basic command of Dutch and the essential structures of the Dutch language. This course aims at developing the four language skills: listening and reading comprehension, oral and written expression, with particular emphasis on oral expression.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

There are no prerequisites.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Learning ativities such as:

  • roleplaying
  • conversation and discussion exercises
  • reading and understanding of short manageable texts
  • listening comprehension of audio and video documents
  • vocabulary assimilation
  • grammar drills
  • writing short and simple texts, summaries, mails,...

Assessment methods and criteria

inal exam consisting of 2 compulsary assessments:  
- Written exam in 2 parts:
Part 1 (4/20): listening comprehension 
Part 2 (8/20): reading and writing skills, grammar and vocabulary 
-Oral exam (8/20)




  • roleplay
  • personal questions on the topics discussed in class
  • questions on a file of newspaper articles (2 pages) compiled by the student in advance
NB: A student who does not take all parts of the exam, obtains 0/20 as a global mark.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

  Online teaching: use of interactive tools and other apps to organize the weekly tasks. Use of emails to send the (interactive) KEYs to the planned activities. Online Q&A session.

- the online written exam based on a reading and listening exercise
- the online oral exam.

Assessment methods

Online examination.
Each student needs to send his or her language trainer the chosen articles for the oral exam and this will be seen as his or her enrollment for the oral exam.
