Learning unit contents

Oral and written activities based on texts and articles dealing with psychology. Students will be required to participate actively in the course, which implies that they must have read the texts before coming to class.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Improving the language comprehension skills which will be evaluated at the end of the year.
Preparing students for higher level English classes (C and D in Master's) and practising the 2 active language skills (speaking and writing).
Enhancing students' ability to cope with English texts (understanding, summarizing, reacting to the content).
Allowing students to speak about various topics related to psychology through discussions based on the texts of the coursebook.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The level of this course corresponds to the European level B2. Students will thus need to have a good basic knowledge of English and a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the A Level course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Weekly 1.5-hour classes in groups of roughly 25 students from September to May.
Thorough preparation is required so as to enable students to progress regularly.

Recommended or required readings

Coursebook "Anglais B en 2ème Bloc Psychologie et logopédie (filière avancée) 3ème Bloc & Master 1 (filière normale)". Available on eCampus and at Intercopy from September 2019 onwards. ?  Grammaire Anglaise de Base, available at the Editions ULiège and at the "Point de Vue" (ST).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in January 

  • Vocabulary, grammar and content questions based on the chapters seen during the first semester.
  • Reading comprehension questions based on passages from the reading file.
  • This exam represents 40% of the final grade.
  • Students who fail the January part will get a second chance in August/September only.
Written exam in May/June
  • Vocabulary, grammar and content questions based on the chapters seen during the second semester.
  • Reading comprehension questions based on an unseen text. .
  • This exam represents 60% of the final grade.
 Final Grade: 
The January exam represents 40% of the final grade while the June exam represents 60%. Students pass the class if their final grade is at least 10/20, no matter their results for each part. However, it is necessary to have taken both parts in order to pass the class.
Written exam in August/September
Students who don't manage to obtain a final grade of at least 10/20 must retake the part(s) they might have failed during the first session.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

The following elements have been implemented and are centralised on the eCapus page of the course:

  • Interactive exercises (WOOCLAP)
  • eCampus forum where students can ask questions
  • Q/A sessions via video conference (Collaborate)

Assessment methods

Online exam on eCampus of maximum 2 hours, which will be made up of two parts (each time will have a specific time limit):

  • Reading comprehension of an unseen text dealing with one of the topics we focused on. A PDF file containing the text will be available 10 minutes before the start of the exam. This questionnaire will be made up of multiple choice questions and True/False questions.
  • language: MCQ based on the vocabulary and grammar points covered (including linking words) as well as open questions on phonetics.
This exam will account for 60% of the final grade, as initially planned.
