Learning unit contents

The course is composed of 4 modules that span over 2 years and that are taught every two years:

  • Module 1 (academic year 2020-2021): we discuss themes dealing with the economy, finance and management so that students can develop the 4 communicative skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) as well as improve their grammar and vocabulary; 
  • Module 2 (academic year 2019-2020): discussion based on a reading file composed of newspaper articles and one published study;
  • Module 3 (academic year 2019-2020): pronunciation (including stress, prosody and fluency);
  • Module 4 (academic year 2019-2020): summarising a video.
Students should buy this grammar book: Intermediate Business Grammar & Practice (2011). N. Brieger & S. Sweeney. Collins.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Communication skills acquisition and practice in both everyday and business contexts, specialized terminology, reading and listening comprehension, written and oral communication (business meetings, interviews, phone calls, business correspondence, etc.).
  • Improvng one's pronunciation;
  • Being able to produce a written summary of a video;
  • Being able to summarize and discuss chosen and prepared texts.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A working knowledge of everyday English (end of secondary school level), i.e. the level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference. Students who haven't reached that level must bring their English back up to level on their own.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final grade .../20 (100%) is calculated as follows.
Module 1 (50%) :

  • Vocabulary and grammar: MCQ and/or open questions (5%)
  • Reading: open questions on a new text (10%)
  • Listening: open questions on a new video or sound file (5%)
  • Writing: writing a short text based on a prompt (10%)
  • Oral interaction: taking part in an interactive discussion with other students (20%)
Module 2 (25%) : summary of a video assessed on content, structure, vocabulary and grammar.
Module 3 (10%) : pronunciation assessed through the student's reading out a chosen text.
Module 4 (15%) : discussion on the basis of a reading file prepared by the student.
Should the student fail or decide to retake a dispensatory exam, he or she must retake the whole module 1, and the modules 2, 3, and 4. Only the latest grade is taken into account even if it is lower than the previous one.

CC1/CC2 (2019-2020)
Written Exam
The in-person written exam is replaced with a homework assignment open for 24 hours. The writing task is identical to that announced at the beginning of the year.
Oral Exam
The in-person oral exam is replaced with an online oral exam. The content of the exam is identical to that announced at the beginning of the year.
CC2 (2018-2019)
The June 2020 exam is cancelled. Consequently, all the grades from the mid-term will be taken into account, even those lower than 10.

CC1/CC2 (2019-2020)
The students who retake the exam must retake the written and oral exam, even if they passed one of them. The students who passed the full exam automatically keep their grades.
Written Exam
The in-person written exam is replaced with a homework assignment open for 24 hours. The writing task is identical to that announced at the beginning of the year.
Oral Exam
The in-person oral exam is replaced with an online oral exam. The content of the exam is identical to that announced at the beginning of the year.
CC2 (2018-2019)
The written exam consists of the following sections weighted as follows:

  • a "language" section on the 2018-2019 material covered in class composed of open questions and/or MCQs (worth 30%),
  • a "reading comprehension" section on a new text composed of open questions and/or MCQs (worth 30%),
  • a "writing" section (worth 40%).
The oral exam is cancelled.
Final Grade
For CC2 students, the final grade is the mean of the exams. Therefore, each exam (CC1 and CC2) is worth 10/20.
