Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course is the Upper Intermediate course, a natural follow-up of the first year's course. It aims to develop all four pillars of language learning (reading, writing, listening, expression).

The course will focus on grammar, needless to say, but will do so in a more pragmatic and even practical way.

In order to improve, students are required to attend class regularly as impromptu tests are not ruled out. It is also important to bear in mind that the more students are exposed to a language, the faster they will be able to pick it up.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Revision and enrichment of advanced English vocabulary as well as of its appropriate use.
  • Reading comprehension: understanding texts, summarizing the information, reacting to the content.
  • Revision and extension of essential and advanced grammar principles and rules.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Recommended or required readings

Course documents will be made available to students through myulg. Plus required reading materials for the examination

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Students have had access to a variety of activities (grammar, language, reading), including video. They have had rather in depth individual and colelctive feedback on their essays and their email-writing skills.

Assessment subjects

Due to restrictions imposed by the authorities, only the students' writing skills will be examined. Their use of grammar and varied vocabulary is judged to be rather important.

Assessment methods

As found in the email sent to all students:
You are going to have to write a 500-word essay on one of the chosen books, where you get to choose which one book you want focus on. Your essay topic is "why did I have to read this book?". This was, as previously announced, a question for your oral exam anyway. I hope that you had kept that in mind when reading. This way, those who have purchased the books are not entirely penalised for having done so.
As for the format, you are expected to have a cover page, containing your name, student ID, and the title of your essay (you may come up with something original). The second page should just contain your essay. You are to use the standard issue margins, font Times New Roman, font size 11, and line spacing 1.08. You ought to format your filename as follows: NAME-firstname-essaytitle. The file should be in a doc format.
